About me
Elena Aguilar is a dedicated advocate and administrator with over a decade of experience serving Indigenous communities. Raised by the communities of San Ildefonso Pueblo and Santa Clara Pueblo, she brings a deeply rooted, culturally informed perspective to her work in social work, tribal government, and education.
In her current role as the English Language Specialist of Indian Education for the New Mexico Public Education Department, Elena is responsible for supporting the implementation of the Indian Education Act. She provides vital technical assistance and customer service to school districts, charter schools, and Tribes across the state. Her career is defined by a commitment to educational sovereignty, ensuring that Indigenous students and families receive equitable support while honoring the unique traditions, values, and linguistic heritage of each tribe.
Elena holds a Master’s degree in Social Work with an emphasis in Leadership and Administration. Her professional background includes ten years in Tribal Government, where she managed grants and promoted holistic wellness, as well as significant work in the non-profit sector focused on expanding early childhood education in rural tribal communities. A staunch legislative advocate, she currently serves on three boards dedicated to early childhood initiatives. In her free time, she enjoys hiking and reading works by Indigenous authors.
