About me
Lisa Harmon-Martínez is the Director of Learning by Doing at Future Focused Education, where she leverages 13 years of experience as a high school educator to reimagine teaching, learning, and assessment. A passionate advocate for holistic assessment, she specializes in celebrating the complex linguistic and cultural wealth of students while ensuring their knowledge and abilities are fully recognized.
During her tenure in the classroom, Lisa Harmon-Martínez served in multiple leadership capacities, including co-coordinator of the bilingual program and teacher–leader facilitator. In 2020, she received the prestigious National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE) Leadership Award for People with Disabilities. She is currently a doctoral candidate in Educational Leadership at the University of New Mexico; her dissertation research investigates the equity of assessments used for seals of bilingualism and biliteracy nationwide. In her current role, she leads the Capstone Initiative Team in partnership with the New Mexico Public Education Department to develop graduate profiles and performance assessments. This work serves as a strategic response to the Yazzie/Martinez ruling, aiming to re-engage students and provide equitable graduation pathways. Furthermore, she and the X3 NeXt team are pioneering youth apprenticeships and career pathways in New Mexico, connecting schools and employers to create meaningful opportunities starting as early as the 10th grade.
Based in New Mexico, she facilitates collaborative learning groups and professional development sessions for students, educators, and district leaders. Her current projects also include the development of AI tools designed to assist educators in creating and evaluating locally-developed performance assessments that meet new state graduation requirements.
